Ipod nano - the entire iPod experience
in an extremely small design

Ipod nano is really amazing - here Apple engineers squeezed, as they put it, the full iPod experience into a very small size - 1.6 inches (40 mm) wide, 3.5 inches (90 mm) long, 0.27 inches (6.9 mm) thick and weighs 1.5 ounces (42 grams).

The nano iPod mp3 and other formats player combining iPod shuffle and iPod features was introduced in September 2005 to substitute extremely popular iPod mini. The device was introduced in two colors (black or white) with two available sizes: 2 GB (about 500 songs) and 4 GB (about 1000 songs). In February 2006, Apple introduced one more size from this line: 1 GB model (240 songs).

In few words this ipod has the following features:

  • holds up to 1000 songs and full-color album art (depends on the model);
  • only 1.6 inches (40 mm) wide, 3.5 inches (90 mm) long, 0.27 inches (6.9 mm)
    thick and weighs 1.5 ounces (42 grams);
  • LCD display 176 x 132 pixels, 1.5 inches (38 mm) diagonal, and can display 65,536 colors;
  • up to 14 hours of battery life;
  • Apple click wheel;
  • charges and syncs via usb;
  • accessory-compatible dock connector;
  • completely skip-free playback;
  • works with Mac OS X or Windows 2000/XP;
  • plays music, podcasts and audiobooks;
  • holds up to 25,000 photos;
  • syncs contacts, calendars and to-do lists.

As you can see iPod nano is a new stage of ipods that is absolutely successful according to the market response - the first 1 million devices were sold in the first 17 days. iPod nano is currently one of the most popular ipods because this flash based mp3 player

  • has more flash memory if compared to the well-known iPod shuffle,
  • at the same it has a small color screen with higher resolution than the old grayscale ipods and this brilliant click wheel as a control,
  • the batteries and other parts are also smaller,
  • accessories can be added to the nano via the Dock connector and headphone jack.

At the same time some users reported several problems, like scratches that make LCD display absolutely unreadable, even with the backlight on. Other ipod owners reported that their LCD screens cracked with no provocation. As a result Apple agreed to replace ipods shipped with faulty screens but denied that nano is more susceptible to scratching than other ipods. Many nano reviews recommend choosing white nano because scratches are not so visible as on black versions. Besides, experienced customers strongly advice purchasing cases for the nano, to keep it and the screen unscratched.
