One of the popular Sony MP3 Players models is the NW-HD5 20GB which is a hard drive based MP3 player. It is covered with stylish aluminium and available in different colors such as red, silver, or black, weighs for about 4.8 ounces and measures 2.4 by 3.5 by 0.6 inches. This player is definitely smaller and lighter than the 4th-invention of 20GB iPod.

The button design of this Sony MP3 Player is very simple. It has less than 1.7-inch monochrome LCD and hold switch ahead next to the headphone jack. The rechargeable battery can approximately last for 30 hours of non-stop MP3 audio playback. When it is tested with a mix of MP3 files encoded at 128 Kbps to 320 Kbps, the battery can even last for almost 24.5 hours, about two times of the iPod battery life.

It includes shock protection that senses when the player is accidentally fell down and releases the recording head to shield the hard disk. It also has an adjustable screen orientation and an excellent audio sound quality at a more reasonable price.

However, the downside of NW-HD5 is its strict and limited DRM and the Windows-only SonicStage software. The installation is lengthy and the software is not yet perfected. This MP3 player somehow limits the user to use SonicStage and ATRAC3 format.
