Brief History of MP3

MP3 simply mean MPEG Audio Layer III. This MP3 is a typical feature for most audio compression. It can make the different music files smaller without affecting the sound quality. The existence of MP3 is based on MPEG that stands for Motion Pictures Expert Group whom known for expertise on displaying video and audio using the innovative feature of lossy compression.

MP3 is truly innovative creations because it can record data without reduction with digital audio signal of ordinarily 16 bit samples at a sampling ratio bigger than two times the actual bandwidth. The great thing about MP3 is it can make more than 1.400 Mbit to stand for one second of stereo music with excellent CD quality. Hence using MPEG audio coding can possibly compress the original sound data from a CD by a part of 12 absolutely without degrading the sound quality.

Way back 1970's the idea of compressing music has been subject of interest and study. Pioneered by the idea of Prof. Dieter Seitzer of Erlangen-Nuremberg University in Germany he led a set of technician and scientist to conduct study in audio coding research. This extensive study give positive result in 1979 where the group created the first digital signal processor with ability to compress audio.

In 1987 another group conduct new study authored by Fraunhofer's Prof. Heinz Gerhaeuser. The said group has created a hardware system found on multiple DSP modules and numerous of audio and date I/O interface cards. As the year progress many intelligent and creative scientist develop innovative features for audio compressions.

Many continue to develop new technology and make way in the development of audio compression system. In 1992 the Moving Picture Experts Group or also known as MPEG introduced the latest innovative system known as the first compression with digital audio and video standards which commonly called MPEG-1. Then the development continue eventually in 1995 MP3 was born. Nowadays, MP3 is one of the hottest gadget and considered as a must-own music piece.
